RODERICK, Jr., Theodore Scott "Ted", 90, passed away March 24, 2008, in Chesapeake Regional Medical Center. He was born in Youngstown, Ohio, and was the son of the late Theodore Scott Roderick Sr. and Mary McLaughlin. Soon after Ted's birth, his family moved to Warren, Ohio. Ted was an Eagle Scout and graduated from Warren G. Harding High School in 1936. In 1937, he won an appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy and graduated in February 1941. His first duty assignment was in the North Atlantic aboard the USS Du Pont. At the start of World War II, he transferred to the submarine service in the Pacific, serving aboard the USS Stingray (SS-186) and USS Torsk (SS-423). During the war he married Mary Frances Taylor, his long- time sweetheart of Norfolk. In 1949 while serving in China, he resigned his commission to spend more time with his family. After the Navy, he soon found employment as a plant manager and then as an electrical engineer. He worked for a number of years in California for General Cable Corp. until retiring in 1978. He and Frances returned to Virginia Beach, where they attended Lynnhaven Colony Congregational Church, and he volunteered as a docent for the Norfolk Zoo. He was an avid golfer and, until recently, belonged to the Virginia Beach Senior's Golf Club. Ted is survived by his son, Theodore Scott III and his wife June of Glen Rock, N.J.; his son, John Christopher and his wife Lorie of Williamsburg; and he is also survived by his four grandchildren, Susan, Stephen, Sarah and Evan. In addition to his loving wife, Frances, he is preceded in death by his four sisters, Dorothy, June, Natalie, and Ginny, and two brothers, Bob and Dick. A memorial service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday at H. D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Laskin Road Chapel.
