Anything built by Electric Boat or Manitowoc... those fleet boats were darn pretty... not the swisscheese superstructures of the Portsmouth boats! Yech!
But I guess the EB Balaos were the best looking, clean conning towers... but a GATO is rather nice too, if it wasn't chopped and welded too badly.
But for my money, the early Gato sails were virtual luxury liners! They had all enclosed steering stands, a vegetable locker in the sail!!! And desks, racks for binoculars, tables for logbooks, etc. It was obvious they were not thinking about CRASH DIVING these boats when they designed the sails. A few war patrols woke them up! Get a chance to look at the orginal velllums of the yard drawings at National Archives... amazing stuff.
