Here is a photo of a periscope on display at the Great Lakes Naval Memorial and Museum (USS Silversides SS236, Muskegon, Michigan).  We are looking for replacement parts to restore the optics to function.  Any suggestions?  Charley Roesch, croesch@comcast.net.

Good luck.

we are in the same boat (no pune intended here).  We have both of our scopes but the optics were damaged by freezing water some years ago.  I will keep an eye on this line and share any info that we have.

I'm trying to contact some folks who might be able to add to this thread.  Hopefully they'll respond.

I did some hunting online and found nada. Maybe you could ask the Navy and see if they know of anyone that can fix them. All they could do is say no.

Paul Lapinski, former Kollmorgen field service manager, will contact you shortly (if he hasn't already) to discuss parts for your Type 2 Cold War era periscope. Looks like it might be easier to just get a new scope. Lots available these days!

Batfish scopes need new lower optics and some TLC to the internal gears/mechanisms for switching magnification.  We'd like to hear from him, too.   ;D

I'll let Paul Lapinski know that he should visit this BBS... although I can't spell Paul's last name correctly (LAPINSKI, not 'sky)... I do know this much about scopes... the mechanism that switches between low and high magnification consists of two stainless steel ribbons that travel up the scope shaft. These ribbons are thinner than a human hair and according to Mr. Lapinski, are a vulnerable point in the scope design. He said that eventually they break and are veerrrry expensive to repair (bad news). What they do is switch a magnifier optic group into the periscope's head assembly. COD's works, for now... which is why I don't allow visitors to play with them. Our staff has been warned about what happens to the guy who "breaks" them....  :knuppel2:

That's very interesting to know.  If that's the case, then we'd be happy to just get the 1X view to work, again, on each scope.  We're surrounded by trees and a 4X magnification wouldn't do us a lot of good, anyway.

Any luck getting a hold of Mr. Lapinski?  I'd actually like to get him down to the boat and let him see what we're up against first hand.  I'll try to post some pictures of the busted optics in a few weeks.

Last time I talked to Charley, he had not heard back from anyone about his periscope predicament.  Anyone able to help the Silversides with this?

We really need a scope guru to give ours some TLC, too.   :'(
