I know this won't cover them all...but just curious what your favorite sub movie is...I'm trying to set this up so that you can choose your top 3.

This is a hard question to answer as they are all so good.   DosBoot really portrays the live on a submarine most accurately.  Our kids today really miss out on what life is really like as the only live it through TV and the internet.

Great poll Mark.  I voted for Das Boot, Down Periscope, and The Hunt for Red October.

I had to vote Down Periscope. That movie is just hillarious. Isn't The Hunt For Red October have to do with a Russian sub?

Yes it is.  Sean Connary (a scottsman playing a russian go figure) is defecting w/ a russiona sub.  I also want to point out the everpresant Timm Curry who also has movies like Home alone, 3 musketeers and Rocky Horror Picture Show on his resume....

I voted Operation Pacific, beccause it details alot of the missions, and things the submarine crews did. It may not be entirely realistic, but it shows them doing island raids, the captain and crew being transferred off to do work at Pearl, rescuing aviators, and of course sinking some ships.

Sadly, I've only seen 5 of the movies listed up top.  I do intend upon seeing them all as soon as I can.  I have a copy of Run Silent, Run Deep, but haven't watched it yet.

I think the sub used in RSRD is the USS Redfish (SS395).  There is one shot in the movie where you can almost make out the numbers.  With only a few points of contention (like all the torpedoes get fired out of the same tube) and it's post-war bridge configuration w/ no 20mm or 40mm guns...it's still a great movie.

I have to vote for DOWN PERISCOPE... I got a bit part in it.  It sure was fun to be a part of, even if it was pure hoooey.

As far as a good realistic sub movie goes, even Das Boot is a bit off the mark. But it still holds top billet. Also must include OPERATION PACIFIC.

PS:  I need to dig out some of the behind the scenes photos I took, scan them, and post them. Kelsey was fun to bearound.

Awesome!  I must know, how did a Cod man end up working with the Pampanito?

RUSSELL BOOTH.

Russ was the man behind the PAMPANITO restoration. There is no one quite like him today in the submarine (or historic warship) field. I try to be (and fall far short of the mark)... a few others come close (Tim Rizzuto of the USS KIDD, USS SLATER).  He called me and asked if I could fly out to help crew the Mighty Pamp during the 45-day on location shoot in Benicia, CA (Suisun Bay Reserve Fleet anchorage).  I did and the rest is wonderful history. Sadly, Russ lived to see the movie premier, but died in 1997, before the movie hit the VHS homevideo bins at WalMart.

I will try and dig out some of the shots I took of the filming.
