How much paint is on your boat....
« on: May 26, 2010, 03:01:53 PM »
this is a general question for any one that has had to paint a Balao/Gato class submarine recently.   I am becoming desperate to get the batfish up to par again.   I have a new plan to get her painted and need a little information from you all.  (Not going into details as this will be done the true Navy way ;D

How many galons of paint does it take to paint a submarine?  Exterior only.....

As usual your help is greatly appreciated.

I haven't kept a close count but I figure about 70 gallons of primer, 50 gals of black and 20 gall grey unless you are doing the last camo job, then I am not sure. The quantities are figured using rollars and will vary using spray. Good luck.

Tom,

Thank you this has been a BIG help.  We just got 30 gal of grey donated to us.  This tells me that I am well on my way to getting this thing done.

Again Thanks.

Keep the input comming.

Don't use NAVY sub paint. It doesn't have UV inhibitors and will literally evaporate in three years.  A good enamel should do. Tom's paint quote sounds about right to me.

Good luck!
