Bow Plane Drawings
« on: June 26, 2014, 10:50:03 AM »
Hi All,

A couple years ago we got our bow planes working, but the gear box overheated so we let it be. Now I have a volunteer ho is determined to solve the mystery and get it working again. They are taking the worm gear box apart and may need to make a new gear. Does anyone have prints/drawings of the worm gearbox and the large brass gear in particular?

Thanks,
Karen

Karen,

A big thing with those bow planes are that they have to be properly greased a LOT especially knowing that they had set for many years without being used, that includes the linkages gearbox and also the fittings on the bow planes themselves and I don't remember if they have to be in the lowered position to be able to grease them or not.  I know that Torsk has her drawings onboard however TVA is not onboard as of yet and I don't know when they will be back onboard.

Have you checked www.hnsa.org yet because that is Rich's site and he tends to put all of his drawings up on the interweb for everyone to see

Karen,

My inventory of the Pampanito microfilm has the following.  It will take some time to check which are actually legible.  It will take longer to merge and crop the multi-frame ones together:
02-075-076   bow diving gear sector gears and connecting rod details
02-077   bow diving gear, bearings for plane stocks
02-078   bow diving gear, bevel gears-shafts and bearing casting for rigging
02-079   bow diving gear details
06-278-280   bow diving gear arrangement forward
06-281-282   bow diving gear flanges and special fittings
06-283-284   bow diving gear rigging interlock valve and bracket details
06-285-286   bow diving gear rigging gear inboard arrangement
06-287-288   bow diving gear rigging and windlass worm gear and clutch details
06-289-290   bow diving gear hydraulic piping arrangement forward
06-291-292   bow diving gear tiller links plane stock details
06-293-294   bow diving gear guide bearings
06-295-296   bow diving gear tilting piston - piston rod etc.
06-297-298   bow diving gear tilting cylinder details
06-299-300   bow diving gear arrangement of tilting gear in forward torpedo compartment
06-301-302   bow diving gear tilting indicator arrangement and details
06-303-304   bow diving gear rigging gear shaft and hull fittings details
06-305-306   bow diving gear rigging indicator and valve operating gear misc. details
06-307-308   bow diving gear tilting control cylinders and power plant assembly
06-309-310   bow diving gear rigging gear worm gear case details
06-311-312   bow diving gear rigging and windlass clutch details
06-313-314   bow diving gear rigging interlock valve operating cams, and misc. details

I am pretty sure Cobia has a hard drive with a copy of our scanned microfilm.  The numbers above are the index to find the file.  Can you take a look and tell me which ones are most promising, and I will merge the files and put them online at:
http://maritime.org/tech/drawings/index.htm

Maybe they could look at the basic drawing and identify the parts to narrow this down a bit:

Thanks Rich! I was actually going to email you about this today! I didn't know these guys were going to really jump into this project right now, so I'm just catching up and trying to help out!
I will pass all this info onto them and see what they accomplished when they were here on Saturday and get back to you.

Karen
